Drysuits

Drysuits keep you completely dry in cold and wet conditions by sealing water out at the neck, wrists and ankles. They are the go-to choice for winter sailing, cold-water kayaking and any session where getting wet would leave you cold.

How to Choose a Drysuit

A drysuit is a fully waterproof shell worn over insulating layers. Unlike a wetsuit, it is designed to keep water out entirely, so warmth comes from the undersuit or base layers you wear underneath rather than from trapped water.

Dinghy vs kayaking drysuits

Dinghy Drysuits prioritise flexibility for hiking, trapezing and active sailing, often with reinforced seats and knees. Kayaking Drysuits are cut for a seated paddling position, with extra attention on the seat, socks and entry zip for boat use.

Front zip, rear zip and hinge entry

Front-zip and hinge-entry suits are generally easier to get on alone. Rear-zip designs can feel cleaner across the chest but may need help to close. Choose based on how often you’ll dress yourself and how much mobility you need once the suit is on.

Seals, socks and undersuits

Latex or neoprene seals at the neck and wrists keep water out — neoprene is often more comfortable for longer wear; latex usually seals more tightly. Many suits include socks; pair the shell with a proper undersuit or thermal layers for UK winter use. Browse Drysuit - Accessories for undersuits and zip lubricant.

Drysuit or wetsuit

Choose a drysuit when you need to stay dry — yacht and dinghy sailing in cold conditions, RIBs, kayaking and long sessions. Choose a wetsuit when you expect immersion and want maximum flexibility for dinghy hiking, surfing, SUP or similar sports. See the comparison guides below.

Drysuit FAQs

When should I choose a drysuit instead of a wetsuit?

Choose a drysuit if you need to stay dry, especially for cold-water sailing, kayaking or long sessions where getting wet would leave you cold. A wetsuit is usually better when you expect immersion and want more flexibility.

What should I wear under a drysuit?

Wear insulating base layers or a dedicated drysuit undersuit. Warmth comes from what you wear underneath the waterproof shell, so match the layers to the air and water temperature and how active you will be.

Are drysuits breathable?

Most modern sailing and kayaking drysuits use breathable waterproof fabrics so sweat can escape while spray and water stay out. Breathability still depends on the fabric, vents and how hard you are working.

Do I need a mens, womens or kids drysuit?

Where possible yes. Womens and kids drysuits are cut differently for a better seal and more comfortable fit through the shoulders, chest and hips, which helps keep water out and improves all-day comfort.

How do I look after a drysuit zip and seals?

Rinse the suit after use, dry it out of direct heat, and keep the zip clean with a suitable lubricant. Check neck and wrist seals regularly for wear — damaged seals are the most common cause of leaks.
